Christopher Anderson

Born in western Canada and brought up in West Texas, Christopher Anderson is the author of nine monographs of photography including the acclaimed trilogy of works about his family. Among his generation’s most widely published photographers, Christopher is a frequent contributor to publications such as The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker. From 2011 to 2014 he served as Photographer in Residence to New York Magazine, a collaboration where he helped to define the visual voice of the magazine with editors Adam Moss and Jody Quon. Christopher was a member of Magnum Photos from 2005 to 2023.

Originally recognised for his work in conflict zones, his photographs depicting a journey with 44 Haitian immigrants attempting to sail to America on a hand-made, wooden boat were awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal. The boat sank in the Caribbean and he would view this experience as a pivotal moment in his development as both a photographer and a human. From that point on, his photographs would be associated with an emotionally charged connection to the subjects, which would eventually include historical figures from presidents to cultural icons. Following the birth of his first child in 2008, Christopher exited the world of journalism and war photography, turning the camera towards family. These photographs would become the bestselling books SON, PIA, and MARION.

Anderson works now as both a filmmaker and photographer working between genres that include his personal images of family, fashion, portraiture and documentary. His most recent book ‘Odyssey’ was published in November 2023 by Stanley Barker. He lives in Paris.
